Chapter 04
The Trunk
The discovery
In a climate-controlled unit off a Long Island service road, I found a rusted military trunk. Inside, wrapped in oilcloth and yellowed newspaper, lay sixty-six black-and-white negatives.
They were pristine. Each one a silver window into Saigon, 1966: market smoke, a girl with a jade bracelet, monks in rain, soldiers in elephant grass, a birdcage shadow.
Beside the negatives rested a Leica M3 with a shattered lens — and a roll of film still inside.
“I held my breath. The negatives were clean, but the camera looked like someone had used it as a shield.”
