Chapter 03
The Key
Father Phúc
Father Phúc was a priest in Saigon's Chợ Lớn. He knew Jörg Nachtnebel, an Austrian photojournalist whose images of Vietnam were just beginning to appear in European magazines.
During our third meeting, Phúc reached into his cassock and pressed a small brass key into my hand. It was old, tarnished, attached to a faded red string.
He said: “The light has been waiting for you.” Then he told me to go to a storage unit on Long Island. He never told me what I would find.
